Update history

Everything new in Shifty, in one place: new modes, settings and fixes, newest first.

The web version (playshifty.com) updates every day; the iOS app arrives release by release through the App Store.

New features

Game friends

After finishing a round together, both save each other from the “You played together” card on the result screen. Next time, tap “Call your friends” in the lobby; on iOS, they get an invite notification. Find your list in Settings → My game friends on iOS, or at the end of My stats on the web.

My stats

Open My stats from the home screen to see your title, win rates as the impostor and as an innocent, and your top categories. Tap “Share my card” to send your record to friends.

Widgets iOS only

Add Shifty widgets to your Home Screen and Lock Screen. Follow your progress with Daily puzzle, Streak and Weekly challenge, or tap “Create room” to start a room for your friends.

Siri and Shortcuts iOS only

Tell Siri “Create a room in Shifty”. You can also use your voice to join a room, play Solo Detective or open the daily puzzle. Add these actions to Shortcuts, or start with the “Create room” button in Control Center.

iPad iOS only

Shifty works in portrait and landscape on iPad. Tap “Put on the table” in the lobby to turn it into the shared table screen. Everyone can follow the game while you play on your phones.

iCloud backup iOS only

iCloud backup saves your stats, Solo Detective progress and settings. Open Shifty on your new iPhone with the same iCloud account to pick up where you left off.

Larger text iOS only

Increase your text size in iOS and every Shifty screen adjusts with it. Even at the largest accessibility sizes, text stays readable and buttons stay within reach.

New features

Settings presets

Pick a preset such as Family, Big party or Hard mode in game settings. It sets up the round for your group, and you can still adjust individual settings afterward.

Mix categories

Build your own mix in game settings by choosing several categories. Words are drawn only from the categories you picked.

Before you start

A summary above Start shows how many impostors will play and which roles will be dealt or skipped. Warnings flag anything affected by your player count or settings before the cards go out.

Vote for a new word

Anyone on the card screen can anonymously request a new word. If more than half of the connected players approve within 20 seconds, the word and roles are dealt again without awarding points. You get up to two redeals per round, and each player can request once.

Take a break

The host can pause the round when the group needs a moment, freezing the timers. Each round allows three breaks of up to five minutes each.

Reveal results step by step

Choose the host-led option under result reveal in game settings. The host uncovers the votes, the accused players, the impostors and finally the word, one step at a time: a great way to build suspense on TV.

Practice round

Open the practice round in How to Play and join Deniz and Ece at the table. Each step is explained as you go, so you can learn the flow before getting your friends together.

Match mode

Pick a goal in the game settings: points or rounds. The lobby and every result show where the match stands ("Ali needs 2 more points"). If the top is tied, a tie-break round decides it. When the match ends, the winners take the podium in a shower of confetti, and you can share the result or start a new match right away.

New mode: Roles

Same face-to-face word game, with a twist: some of you get a secret role. The Detective knows the word and one player who is definitely innocent. The Accomplice knows who the impostor is and steers suspicion elsewhere, while the impostor has no idea they have a helper. The Confused gets a slightly different word without knowing it and thinks they are a regular innocent. Everyone finds out who was who at the end of the round. First-timers get a short introduction, and your card explains what you know and what to do.

Difficulty levels

Every word now has a difficulty. In room settings and in single-phone mode, choose Mixed, Easy, Medium or Hard. Easy words are ones everybody knows, perfect for playing with kids. Hard words are rarer and easier to mix up. The category list also shows how many words each category has at that level.

Word packs

Give your "Your words" list a name and get a 6-letter code. Send the code or the playshifty.com/p/CODE link, and your friends can play with exactly the same words, in a room or on a single phone. Your recent packs are remembered on your device.

Emoji reactions

In the lobby and during a game, tap the smiley button and pick one of eight ready-made reactions. It floats up from your face like a bubble, and everyone (and the TV screen) sees it right away. There's no free text and nothing is stored.

Your last room

If the room you last played is still open, a card shows up on the home screen, even after you closed the app. One tap takes you back in as the same player, no need to type the code again.

A new last chance

The new "Last chance" section in room settings lets you choose how the guess works: the caught impostor either types the word (case and accents don't matter) or picks it from a list. The list can have 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 options. When more than one impostor is caught, they now decide together and lock in the guess once they agree.

Up to 20 players and 9 impostors

Rooms now hold up to 20 players, each with their own color. Type any impostor count from 1 to 9 or use − and +. There are always fewer impostors than innocents, and a short note tells you when there aren't enough players for your setting.

Impostors know each other

Playing with two or more impostors? Turn on the new setting and each impostor sees their teammates on their card. Building a story together and covering for each other is a lot more fun.

Improvements

Tap to reveal your card

There is now a tap option for revealing your card if holding it down is uncomfortable or difficult. Choose the gesture that works for you.

Get ready to play offline Web only

On the web, single-phone mode now tells you whether it is ready to work offline. While you have a connection, you can download what is needed before heading out.

Keep your clue draft

If the connection drops while you are writing a clue in Remote mode, your draft is kept. Reconnect while it is still your turn and carry on where you left off.

Shifty's eyes come alive

While you type your name or a room code, Shifty's eyes follow the cursor. It looks happy when you get in and sad when a code doesn't work or a name isn't allowed. The impostor card on the home screen glances around and blinks now and then, too.

Cards move with your phone

The three cards on the home screen react to your phone's movement: as you tilt it, each card turns at its own depth, giving the deck a 3D feel. On the web, Safari may ask once for motion access on your first tap. Sensor data is only used on your device, in the moment.

No category on the back of the card

The card screen's background used to be able to show the category, so a glance at someone else's phone could give something away. Now everyone sees the same "SHIFTY" backdrop, and the category only appears on the secret card you press and hold.

The round ends when every impostor leaves

When every impostor leaves the room, the game no longer drags on for nothing: the round ends without points, everyone gets a short notice, and you're back in the lobby.

Rebuilt for iOS 27 iOS only

Shifty has been rebuilt with the latest developer tools so it runs smoothly on iOS 27 and the newest iPhones.

Bug fixes

  • Emoji reactions appear and can be sent in quick succession. Emoji bubbles on iOS now animate and appear correctly, and the reaction picker opens in an easier-to-use tray. Web and iOS also let you send reactions in quick succession.
  • Word filtering respects the chosen language. Filtering for custom words and word packs now takes the selected language into account. Valid German phrases such as “Eis am Stiel” are no longer rejected by mistake.
  • An impostor leaving during the vote. In rounds with several impostors, if one of them left the room, the remaining impostors could no longer be caught. Now everyone votes for as many players as there are impostors left; votes cast for the old number are asked again, and votes for a player who left don't count.
  • A locked phone no longer ends the round. In Side by side and Cards only, the round could end by mistake when an impostor's phone locked and its connection dropped for a while. Since these modes are played around the same table, only a player who actually leaves the room now counts as gone.
  • Long name lists in the last chance. When several impostors were caught, their names could overflow the last-chance screen. Long lists now wrap onto the next line and stay readable on every phone.
