Everyone knows the word. Except one.

Shifty is an impostor word game you play with friends in the same room. Everyone's phone shows the same secret word, except the impostor's. Listen to the clues and vote to catch the impostor.

How to play

  1. Create a room. One person creates a room and becomes the host. A 4-letter room code, an invite link and a QR code appear on screen.
  2. Join. Everyone else enters the code, opens the link or scans the QR code. You need at least 3 and at most 20 players.
  3. Set up. The host picks the mode, category, number of impostors (1–9), discussion time and whether the impostor gets to see the category, then starts the game.
  4. Check your card. Everyone looks at their card in secret. The impostor's card has no word and simply tells them they're the impostor.
  5. Give clues. Take turns saying a short clue out loud that doesn't give the word away. The impostor tries to blend in.
  6. Vote. The host starts the vote (with an optional discussion timer). Everyone votes in the app for the player they suspect.
  7. Last chance. If the impostor is caught, they get to guess the word. A correct guess still wins it for the impostor. The impostor also wins on a tie or if an innocent player is voted out.

How do I join a room?

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account?

No. There are no accounts, emails or passwords. You just type a display name when you join a room. A nickname works fine.

How many people can play?

Between 3 and 20 players. The host picks 1 to 9 impostors, and there are always fewer impostors than innocents. Several impostors make bigger groups more fun.

The room code doesn't work.

Please check:

  • The code has 4 letters and must match the host's screen exactly.
  • Rooms are deleted automatically a few minutes after everyone leaves, and at the latest about 3 hours after the last activity. An old code won't work anymore, so create a new room.
  • The room may be full (20 players max).
  • Check your internet connection.
I lost my connection or closed the app.

Rejoin the room from the same device and the same app (or the same browser). If the room is still open, you'll continue as the same player.

Who judges the impostor's last guess?

When caught, the impostor says their guess out loud. The host (if they're not the impostor) or one of the innocent players marks in the app whether the guess was right.

I saw an inappropriate name. What can I do?

The host can remove that player from the room; they can't rejoin it. Anyone can tap a player (in the lobby, or next to their clue) and choose Report, or Block to hide their clues on your screen. You can also email support@playshifty.com with the room code, display name and approximate time. We review every report within 24 hours. See the Terms of Use for the rules.

The invite ticket moves when I tilt my phone. Does that need a permission?

Not in the iOS app. On the website, Safari may ask once for motion and orientation access. The game works fine without it, you just won't see the effect. Either way, the motion sensors are used on your device only, in real time, and no data is stored or sent.

How do I change the language?

Shifty supports English and Turkish. Change the app language with the EN / TR switch on the home screen. The words in a game use the language of the person who created the room.

What data do you collect, and how do I delete it?

We only process your display name, a random player ID and game data. Room data is deleted automatically when the room closes, at the latest after about 3 hours. See the Privacy Policy for details and how to delete data.

Does Shifty cost anything?

Shifty is currently free and has no ads.
